Shame

According to Dr Hawkins, this level is just a step above death. Shame is built on foundations of fear, self-hatred, and the sense that you’re not “enough.” Worthiness simply can’t flourish if you think this way.

This is the level where people contemplate suicide and is the level of most notorious serial killers. Think of this as self-directed hatred. People at this level report being miserable and in a lot of pain and humiliation. According to Hawkins, those who suffer from sexual abuse are often found here, and without therapy they tend to remain here.

Researcher and author Brene Brown defines shame as the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging – something we’ve experienced, done, or failed to do makes us unworthy of connection.

From her research she believes that shame is not helpful or productive, in fact it is much more likely to be the source of destructive, hurtful behavior than the solution or cure.
